Don’t know how you should dress for an audition??? Below are 3 Go-To Plus Size Modeling Outfits for auditions that you can easily have in your closet on a moment’s notice to BOOK.THAT.JOB!
When first starting out in the modeling industry, especially if you don’t have an agency to guide you, you can be FULL of questions. With one of the main questions being, what the hell do I wear to my first audition!?!?
Luckily, audition outfits are super simple and more than likely, you already have all the pieces you need in your closet! If not, the pieces suggested are basics worth investing in that you can wear every day even outside of auditions!
These three outfits are the outfits even the most famous plus size models are wearing to their auditions and castings.
Plus size clothing can be complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. Which is why I put together three outfits that are brand AND agency approved so you are prepared and ready for action.
This post is all about the go-to outfits you need to know about to wear to auditions for agencies, casting directors, and brands.
Plus Size Modeling Outfits
1. The Black on Black Combo
Black leggings with a black tank top is one of the most classic plus size modeling audition looks there is. There are a few reasons why it is so popular.
First, one of the main things you should be focused on for your audition is showing off your body. I don’t mean in terms of showing off skin. I mean showing off the natural curves of your bod. Which is why black leggings are popular for auditions.
Second, clients are looking for your exact measurements and they WANT to see you show off the silhouette of your body body, not hide it! Having fitted clothes is a MUST when auditioning.
Third, I would strongly suggest going black on black for this legging and tank top combo to keep it professional and simple. I’ve truthfully never gone to an audition in all my 12+ years of modeling and seen anyone in leggings other than black so that speaks volumes.
Here are the exact leggings I wear to auditions! I love these leggings because the quality of the fabric is great which makes them last longer than regular leggings which can be hard to find in plus size clothing due to chub rub.
I also love that the waistband is thick and doesn’t roll down.
Torrid is a store that frequently has sales so I suggest signing up for their email list if you’re not already so you can be alerted when they’re having a sale!
P.S the leggings are frequently buy one get one 50% so definitely sign up for the email alerts!
This is my favorite black tank top to wear to auditions. I feel like buying quality tank tops for plus size women can be hard to find. Although, it is a little pricey for a tank top, I definitely think it’s worth the investment.
For so long, I had tanks that were too short in the rib cage or easily got holes in them from being so flimsy. I love this tank because of the quality of the fabric and its full coverage in the rib cage area.
Another reason it’s such a great tank is because it comes in so many neutral colors.
For tank tops, stick to neutral and/or earth tone colors such as white, black, gray, green, or brown.
2. The Jeans and Tank Combo
The second most popular audition outfit is just your traditional neutral tank top and jeans.
When looking for the perfect audition jeans, I would recommend aiming for quality and fit. Not only can you wear these types of jeans to auditions, but they are great for portfolio shoots and photoshoots in general as well.
Out of any of the pieces from these plus size modeling outfits, I would say great fitting jeans are your most important clothing investment. Ill fitting jeans can make your shape appear totally different so spend the time trying them on and find the perfect fit.
When it comes to the style of the jeans, plain is the key! Now is NOT the time to wear your favorite ripped jeans, embellished and bedazzled jeans, loose boyfriend jeans, etc. you get the picture. Just plain jeans like the ones pictured above!!
My favorite audition jeans are these ‘Good Legs Crop’ by GOOD American jeans. I have found Good American jeans last me a long time and the fit is like butter. I also like that GOOD American can be found in stores and not just online so you can try them on in person in stores like Nordstrom.
My second favorite audition jeans are these from Universal Standard. I love Universal Standard because they have a wide size range from size 00 – to size 40 and a huge variety of jeans to choose from (but remember we’re looking for jeans that are simple).
Universal Standard jeans are also high quality and the jeans I do have from them have lasted me years so you’re definitely getting your money’s worth.
Although the GOOD American jeans are my fave, the great thing about Universal Standard is that they frequently have more sales than GOOD American so you can get the same quality for less. I suggest signing up for their emails to be alerted of the sales!
3. Form Fitted Simple Dress
Lastly, the best plus size modeling outfit for auditions is a good neutral colored, form fitting dress.
Although, I HIGHLY suggest you go with one of the top two suggested outfits – a dress is a great way to leave an impression. As I mentioned before, it’s SO important that your silhouette shows. Just like the jeans, an ill fitting dress could make you appear as a totally different shape.
Neutral colors are key. Avoiding bold prints or deep, royal colors are important because you don’t want the dress to be a loud, over bearing statement. REMEMBER: you are a blank canvas as a model.
Wearing a dress would mostly be appropriate for commercial modeling/acting versus your standard modeling job.
My favorite place to order audition or portfolio dresses is from ASOS. They have a great return policy, a wide selection, and I love their size tool that helps you find the best fit for accuracy.
Plus Size Modeling Outfits: Audition Shoes
For auditions, 99% of the time I ALWAYS recommend showing up in heels unless stated otherwise from casting!!! What kind of heels you may ask? The standard modeling heel is a 4+ inch black heel as pictured below.
Your heels should be like your jeans – SIMPLE. No designs, no sparkles and crystals, no straps that are hard to get in and out of. Just a classic, 4 inch black pump.
But Hayley, I can’t wear heels! That’s OKAY!!
If you are new to heels, you need to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE esp. if you want to do runway!!!!! However, in the meantime, I would recommend grabbing the highest heel you CAN walk in, even if it is one or two inches, and start practicing in those.
Whenever I want to practice walking in a shoe, I wear them to the grocery store! It helps break in the shoe and you’re only standing in them for a short period of time. Plus, the cart and/or groceries can help your posture and balance!
I also like to walk up and down my apartment halls like their runways!!
Pro tip: Avoid wearing wedges. I know they’re comfortable, but just don’t do it – it’s like the training wheels of heels. You don’t want to get too comfortable and most importantly, the fashion industry doesn’t recognize them as a legitimate heel. You’re better off starting in kitten heels, seriously!!!
Even if you walked onto set and the heels are provided for you, they will most likely be 4 inch heels so start practicing!
Plus Size Modeling Outfits: Audition Accessories
One thing to always keep in mind as a model is that you are a blank canvas. You are helping the brand’s vision come to life. Part of the reason why your audition outfit is so simple is because you want casting agents to be able to see you fit their vision of what the brand is looking for.
Just like the outfits, when it comes to accessories, you guessed it – KEEP IT SIMPLE! I wouldn’t suggest more than studded earrings or a simple bracelet or ring. The simpler, the better. No crazy designs or jewels. No layering of the jewelry. Simply one or the other.

Plus Size Modeling Outfits: The Only Exceptions**
The only time all of this info goes out the door is if casting asks for a specific look or outfit. More commonly for acting castings – once in a while you may be asked to wear something specific.
Maybe you’re a background extra model for a commercial or TV show. They will probably want you dressed in character. For example, if you’re on a set for a back to school commercial, they might have you come dressed as a teacher to the audition. In that case, you would dress according to how you think a teacher might dress.
Another example would be, maybe you’re auditioning for an activewear shoot so they might have you come dressed in activewear. Or a holiday shoot, they might have you come in a Christmas sweater!
Other than that, you are always going to wear one of the three recommended outfits above. These outfits are industry standard and agency/casting suggested.
