Most people set New Year’s Resolution Ideas that are personal to themselves. However, when it comes to career goals esp. something so niche as plus size modeling, sometimes the answers may not be as obvious.
As a plus size model for almost a dozen years, I can tell you what New Year’s Resolution Ideas should be on your radar as an aspiring plus size model for 2023!
After reading these New Year Resolution Ideas, you’ll be inspired to start the new year with a BANG as a plus size model!!!
This post is all about New Year’s resolution ideas and goals for aspiring plus size models.
New Year’s Resolution Ideas
1. Believe in Yourself
As silly and cheesy as it sounds, this is going to be the NUMBER ONE idea out of all New Year’s Resolution Ideas I have for you. Because it’s so simple, that’s what makes it so hard!!! If you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect a modeling agency or brand to believe in you???
We spend so much time in this day and age sending our energy and beliefs to our favorite celebs and influencers – imagine what would happen if we took that energy to our lives and careers??? If we hyped ourselves up the way we do our favorite people?! WHAT A CONCEPT!
The modeling industry and fashion world is tough, you will get more no’s than yes’s usually so you have to remember your purpose and why you started. No matter what you do, it should be for YOU and for no one else.
People push boundaries and change societal norms every day and YOU are no different from the people setting the trends and wearing the clothes. You CAN make a difference and be the change!!!
2. Practice in the Mirror
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!! I can’t say this enough!! Just like a professional sport, the more you practice modeling, the more it becomes muscle memory. Eventually, you’ll just do it without having to think about it.
I suggest using a full length mirror like the one below. Not only is it great for practicing facial expressions and full body posing, but it can also help you practice runway too!
Remember: there won’t be a mirror on set for you to practice with. The more you practice, the more confident you will be and your body will remember naturally what it needs to do.
3. Take Digitals
Digitals are designed to show off your natural beauty before all glitz and glam. When submitting to most modeling agencies, they WILL ask for digitals in the submission section or take digitals of you at an in person casting.
Once you have your digitals together, you can easily submit to agencies.
List of digitals to have on hand…
- front full body
- side full body
- back full body (with hair pulled to the side)
- 3/4 shot
- headshot
- hands (front and back)
To read more about what to wear, what do and what not to do in your digitals, check out the blog post I wrote, ‘5 Reasons You DIDN’T Get Signed to Plus size Modeling Agencies‘.
4. Practice Walking in Heels
Realistically, most auditions and brands you walk into will expect you to be able to wear heels. As I mention in my blog post, ‘3 Go-To Plus Size Modeling Outfits For Auditions‘, unless stated other wise in an audition notice or asked to wear something specific – I ALWAYS wear heels!
Don’t know how to walk in high heels yet? That’s OKAY!! I recommend grabbing the highest heel you CAN walk in, even if it is a kitten heel or one or two inches!!! Just start practicing in those and work your way up.
My pro tip is, whenever I want to practice walking in a new heel, I wear them to the grocery store! It helps break in the shoe and you’re only standing in them for a short period of time. Plus, the cart and/or groceries can help your posture and balance!
I also like to walk up and down my apartment halls like their runways!!
5. Start a Skincare Routine
A skincare routine is something a lot of people already have however as model, it is something you NEED to have!
It’s no secret models are held to a higher beauty standard than the average person. And although modeling agencies and brands don’t expect you to have perfect skin, they do expect you to actively take care of and clean your skin!
Reasons to have a great skincare routine…
- modeling agencies want you to look like your photos in person
- some brands avoid using photo retouchers and some brands don’t use photoshop at all
- clean skin shows good hygiene and personal care
For some of my absolute personal favorite skincare products, check out my beauty blog post, ‘5 Life Changing Skincare Products‘.
6. Research Agencies
I can not stress this enough, research different agencies!! So many times I hear people get caught up with big named agencies however more than ever, boutique agencies are SHINING!!
And a con to being signed with a big agency when you are brand new is, you could be shelved. Shelved means, they give work to their more popular models verse taking a chance on one of their more fresh faces.
Another reason to research agencies is because some agencies do specific things.
For example, if you’re in Miami, it’s common to see modeling agencies that only specialize in swim/lingerie and that may be something you’re not comfortable with and to consider.
Or for example myself, I have one agency that specializes in commercial work rather than fashion. So although I may get fashion work from them time to time, I expect to mostly get only commercial work from them.
Every agency is so different and unique and what may work for one model may not work for another. It’s definitely worth the effort of researching different agencies for a few hours.
Make a list of pros and cons and rate the order of which you want to submit from greatest to least greatest.
Remember, modeling agencies need you as much as you need them so don’t get caught up, DO YOUR RESEARCH!!
7. Invest in Casting Sites
Casting sites are going to be a HUGE deal esp. if you’re an independent model looking for work. They’re not free, but in my experience they’ve always paid off. Quite literally, I’ve always made my money back on any of the casting sites I’ve used and currently use every year.
And although I am signed and booked with great agencies, a majority of the work I’ve booked is through MYSELF! Like the national commercial I did for Forever21 in Times Square above!
In my blog post, ‘5 Easy Ways to Book Plus Size Modeling Jobs with No Experience‘, I mentioned some of my favorite casting sites I use to submit myself and book modeling AND acting work!! Definitely check it out!!
8. Buy a Planner/Schedule Book
I can’t stress enough how important it is to be organized as a plus size model. Being a plus size model is not a normal 9-5 job. It requires a lot of self discipline and time management skills which can be hard for a lot of people.
Although we live in the era of technology and everyone has digital calendar or ical. I highly suggest having a physical schedule as well if you’re a model.
TWICE, my icalendar crashed on me and I missed auditions and castings I was suppose to go to. It was a nightmare!!
This is my favorite planner. I’ve ordered it for over 5 years now! Not only does it have the months, it also breaks down the days by the hour for more detailed planning as well.
9. Invest in a Portfolio
The most expensive part of modeling is building your portfolio. You will be building your portfolio your entire modeling career no matter what level you reach! Every plus size model updates their portfolio 2 – 5x a year including myself.
Having and updating your portfolio shows brands, companies, and agencies your growth as a model as well as what you’re capable of doing! Casting sites and agencies don’t want to keep seeing the same photos time and time again.
It also shows them what you currently look like.
For portfolio inspiration of what modeling agencies and brands are looking for in your portfolio, check out my blog post ‘5 Must-Have Photos in Your Plus Size Modeling Portfolio That Will Get You Booked‘!
10. Take an Online Course or In Person Workshop
Even major CEO’s of brands and companies take online courses and in person workshops to expand their careers and knowledge. No matter what your career is or what stage you’re in in your career, there’s always something new to learn!
Some online courses or in person workshops I recommend are…
- acting and improv classes (helps get you comfortable on set and being in front of a camera as well as working with others)
- plus size modeling coaching and consultations with yours truly, you can directly BOOK HERE
- business coaching and advice; my favorite business coach is Brianne, I HIGHLY suggest signing up for her email list HERE for business advice and to be notified of her online classes and workshops

11. Tag Brands in your Social Media Posts
Whether you want to be an influencer or not, tagging brands in what you’re wearing or using is a great way to get noticed by them! Tag everything from hair products, make up, clothing, shoes, accessories and more!!
If it’s a brand you want to work with some how, some day, TAG THEM! They LOVE to see you interact with them.
The first and easy step, it to just go back on your existing photos on your social media and start tagging what you already posted!
I’ve booked several paid jobs in Los Angeles AND New York by tagging brands and building relationships with them over the DMs. Companies love to see you organically using and wearing their things which makes you an even better candidate to be a model for them in the future!
