Are you wondering how you can start a plus size modeling career with no modeling experience? Below are 5 recommendations on how you can start booking plus size modeling jobs with no experience necessary!!
When you’re starting out in the modeling industry, it can feel like you might not be able to get work without an agency which is totally NOT true!!
In fact, I’ve been signed to over 7 agencies however over 85% of the work I’ve booked and MAJOR campaigns were totally on my own with some of the recommendations I will be giving you below! Having an agency is definitely not the end all be all so don’t let it consume you or stop you!
You CAN find plus size modeling jobs with no experience, you just need to have the self discipline to find them and/or invest in yourself.
This post is all about how to find plus size modeling jobs with no experience.
Plus Size Modeling Jobs with No Experience
1. Backstage App
Backstage App is one of my secret weapons that I love!!! It’s a website/app on your phone where you can submit for work in modeling, acting, theater, film, TV, paid remote work, and more!
It costs about $200 annually (unless you use my special link below, it’ll save you ALOT of $$$), but so far it’s been worth the pay off for me!
My first year, I got a $6k job on it and the second and third year, I got a $1k job off of it so each time it’s literally paid for itself and I plan to renew in 2023 too!
I especially recommend this app for aspiring plus size models because you can find paid AND collab work! Which is great when trying to build your portfolio and resume!!!!
I love the settings option too because you can narrow it down by location, playable age roles, gender, and/or pay or collaborative work so you don’t waste your time wondering through pages and pages of work you don’t want anyways.
Note: this does not work for every city, but they do have a wider option of major and minor cities to choose from than most casting websites and forums.
Below is a link that gives you $75 off your first year of membership, so you can try it out and see if you can land roles! You can thank me later!!!!! 🙂

2. Casting Instagrams
So most models I know completely gate keep this, but I don’t believe in gate keeping so here we go baby!! Casting instagrams are a real thing. There so many independent casting companies that again, you do not need an agent to book amazing gigs!
It can be as simple as checking your instagram everyday for castings on casting instagrams such as the one I listed below!
I love this casting page (@castbyus) because I personally know friends who have worked with them in New York and had great experiences through them that were paid!!
ALSO, if you’re following the How To Be A Plus Size Model instagram you’ll notice I post castings on the IG stories often!!
3. Facebook Groups
This one is for the aspiring plus size models that live in smaller cities/states/countries. What I’ve come to find is that most smaller cities use Facebook groups to connect within their niche. And if the group doesn’t exist then it’s the perfect chance for YOU to create something major in your niche/where you’re from.
For example, you could create a group called ‘Ohio Plus Size Models’ or ‘North Dakota Models’ or ‘Kansas Influencers’ or ‘Oklahoma Fashion’, you get the point – something that makes your group easy to search by your fellow peers near you.
It’s also a great place to connect with other creatives such as hair, make up artists, photographers, other models, stylists in your area so you can all reach a common goal – build your portfolios and get more practice!
Some Facebook groups for you to join…
- Atlanta’s Exclusive Plus Size Model Directory (Atlanta)
- Plus Size Models & BBW of the Midwest USA (Midwest States: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin)
- Vegas Curvy Girls (plus size models, and interested photographers & HMUAs) (Nevada)
- NY / NJ / CT Plus Size Fashion Network (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut)
I HIGHLY encourage you to search for groups in your area with key words such ‘plus size model’ with your location or modeling within your state.
And again, if you don’t find any, make it happen yourself!!!
4. Networking Events
Networking events in the plus size industry are KEY!!!!! Find your nearest plus size business, brands, stores, etc. and follow them on IG and if they have events or mixers, GO.TO.THEM!!!!!
The plus size fashion industry is smaller than you think. Eventually everyone gets to know each other. A majority of the work I’ve booked by myself when I first started out and even today was from networking with people at events!
The power of networking is underrated so put yourself out there and work on your social skills esp. if you’re an introvert because you will need this skill as a model.
Below are two plus size fashion stores I recommend following if you’re in LA or NY. They have amazing events with major people in the plus size industry whether they’re coming to mingle or speak.
5. SocialNative
If you’re an aspiring plus size model looking to also getting into being an influencer/content creator model than SocialNative is perfect for you!
SocialNative connects influencers with great brands in a transparent way! Not all the brands on SocialNative pay however you get these details before you apply so you’re not wasting your time if you only want paid content.
I have personally booked a couple major campaigns on SocialNative and had a good experience.
The pro, it’s free! The con, you don’t really get to negotiate the deal too much. Either way, it’s a great way to start your career not only as a plus size model, but also a plus size content creator which is a great way to network with brands.
Sometimes brands don’t want to do social media content with you, but they see your work and they want to hire you as a model or vice versa which has personally happened to me before!!! So I definitely think it’s worth the time esp. for an aspiring plus size model!
