Being in the modeling industry can be tough. That’s why having tools to help you keep a positive mindset and grow your confidence are SO important.
If there’s anything I’ve learned about being in the entertainment industry since I was in middle school; it’s that you have to have tough skin, but most importantly, you have to believe in yourself.
Believing in yourself no matter what industry you’re in can be hard. It’s more easier said than done like a lot of “simple” things in life. That’s why things like positive affirmations, inspirational quotes, motivational speeches, and other self help tools are keys to success!!!
This post is all about inspirational quotes to help you create a more motivational mindset!
Inspirational Quotes
1. “You are far too smart to be the only thing standing in your way.“
One of the great things about wanting to become a plus size model is that you don’t need someone to come along and tell you whether you can or can’t be a plus size model. You can literally JUST. GO. FOR. IT.
So if you’re not starting your plus size modeling career, it’s not because anyone is standing in your way, YOU are standing in your way. GO AFTER YOUR DREAMS!!
2. “The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams!!”
I hate to sound corny, but – YOLO (YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE). If you want to be a plus size model you just need to go for it like anything else you would in your life!!
I don’t know about you, but I have FOMO (fear of missing out) so I would much rather do something and say I did it whether I failed or not then not do something and always wonder “what if”.
A great example of this is when I walked NYFW in 2019. Out of the THOUSANDS of models at NYFW – LESS than a couple HUNDRED are plus size models & even LESS are VISIBLY plus.
Every year previously, I went to NYFW to see the shows/events, but in 2019 year I took a HUGE chance. I put all my finances on the line, maxed out my credit cards, quit all jobs or activities I was doing, I packed all my bags for 6 weeks & moved to New York in hopes to pursue one goal – walk at New York Fashion Week.
There was no promise that I was going to book a show or even any work for that matter, but I knew even if I didn’t walk NYFW, at least I could say I tried my hardest and did my best.
After two weeks of dozens of castings, it was my last day of castings. I took 5 trains, 3 hours of travel, walked 4 miles in the rain (in heals) to get to my last very casting. I almost didn’t get in because my phone died & I didn’t have my admission email for the casting.
However, luck worked in my fortune & that very last casting happened to be THEE casting!!!! It’s something I will never forget.
3. “Don’t compare your life to others. There’s no comparison between the sun and the moon, they shine when it’s their time.”
Sometimes it can be hard to find the balance between comparing yourself to others verses looking for inspiration and/or motivation. There are so many different types, shapes, colors, sizes, and looks of models and there is truly room for everyone.
I always tell my students, you want to STUDY other models, NOT compete!!! Social media is an illusion so don’t get caught up in smoke and mirrors. Just study your craft and you will shine when it’s your time.
Even though it was over 5 years ago, I’ll never forget when I went to the audition for the photoshoot above. It was for the major brand, Stitch Fix.
I remember walking in to the casting room and comparing myself to all the other models thinking, “if these are the models here auditioning, there’s no way I’m booking this gig”. I was in the same room as major plus size models at the time and when I should have been studying them, I unfortunately was comparing and ridiculing myself.
When I booked the job, I was SHOCKED! It gave me a whole new faith in myself and my craft. And it made me realize a few things…
- you never know what a casting agent/director is truly looking for
- don’t be too hard on yourself
- confidence goes a long way
- have faith in yourself
- practice makes perfect
- you’re just as worthy as the other models
4. “Don’t be afraid to fail. Be afraid not try.”
In the entertainment industry – there’s going to be a lot of no’s, but there’s always going to be a yes around the corner. You may not be the right fit for one agency or brand, but you may be a perfect match for another so don’t give up!
“Failing” just means you’re being redirected for something that was truly meant for you!! And usually, it’s something bigger and better than what you originally hoped for!

5. “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
As humans, we get so caught up in the “how”. And as crazy as it sounds, YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW HOW!
You just need to put in the work and while you’re working towards your goals, the “how” unfolds and fills in the pieces itself. Use the resources and tools you already have and start with that.
6. “There are no shortcuts. Work hard, be patient, consistent, and never give up!”
When it comes to plus size modeling, being consistent and working hard is what it’s all about. Modeling is not a job you clock in and out of every day. You have to be consistent, disciplined and only YOU can make the work happen.

No matter what it is you’re waiting to do in life, there is NEVER a “right” time! You just have to make a move and a commitment to yourself to just do it! And sometimes that means figuring things out as you go along instead of as you planned or else you could be waiting forever.

One thing I’ve seen a lot of my personal aspiring model clients do, is trying to the same thing and expecting different results… it’s insanity!!
For example, I had a student who didn’t understand why modeling agencies weren’t responding to her. She kept sending in the same photos thinking no one was seeing her submissions when in reality, the agencies wanted to see new and updated photos as her practice progressed.
If you’re trying something over and over and it’s not working, I deeply encourage you to try something new you wouldn’t usually try! Usually behind fear and/or discomfort is where our answers and victories lie.
9. “Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your mind. Be led by the dreams in your heart.”
It’s easy to get trapped in our comfort zone and let your fears consume you, but don’t settle for easy! That’s why reprograming your mind is so important.
Like I said before, things like positive affirmations, inspirational quotes, motivational speeches, and other self help tools are great keys to success.
That’s why I love little things around my house with positive affirmations or inspiring phrases like the throw pillow up above to have a daily reminder around me!!
10. “Peace comes within. Do not seek it without”
The answers you’re looking for are in your heart. You can not seek validation of your dreams from the people around you whether they support you or not.
Plus size modeling is not easy, you genuinely have to be doing it for YOU and no body else.
The only control we have is over ourselves and how we respond and that alone can bring you peace within. Maybe society, friends or family don’t agree with your choice to be modeling or how you look or your goals… you can’t control them, but you can control yourself and keep living your dreams!
You do NOT need validation from other people.
11. “You alone are enough. You have nothing to prove to anybody.”
The only person you have to prove anything to is yourself. If you’re happy with you and you’re trying the best you can, that’s literally all you can do!!!
12. “If it was easy, everyone would do it.”
As I mentioned at the very beginning of this article, usually the most simple things are the hardest to accomplish.

Sometimes we don’t reach our goals the way we think we will and that’s OKAY!
For example, maybe you don’t have the funds and/or resources to create a portfolio. However, everyone has the resources to create digitals!
Focus on what you can do about the situation you’re in and work from there. Something is better than nothing which is a step in the right direction.

A big part of being successful in the modeling industry is your personality despite what you may think!
You could have the most natural talent at modeling, but if you don’t have the inner beauty as well – you may be SOL (shit out of luck). Part of being a great model is being able to channel the energy within and bring it without.
I’ve booked so many jobs from my personality and energy, that’s why self care and confidence are so important.
15. “You will never always be motivated, so you must learn to be disciplined”
Again, being a model it’s not a typical job. You don’t have benefits, time off, a boss to manage you, sometimes you work holidays, you have to manage your finances really well, etc..
No one is going to do those things for you, you have to do them yourself so it’s important to be disciplined to maintain your career and responsibilities.

I started modeling over 12 years ago. I was so young and some people thought eventually I would just “snap out” of it and realize I need a “real job”.

If anyone ever makes you feel like your dreams are too big, you’re probably just around more simple and small minded people. There is nothing wrong with being “normal” and living a more traditional lifestyle.
However, there is also nothing wrong with dreaming BIG and living out your wildest dreams!!!! You just need to surround yourself with people, things, and environments that support your growth and be able to walk away from the things that don’t.
