When becoming and being a plus size model, there are many costs associated with starting and up-keeping your career. As a plus size model for over 12 years, I can accurately help you gage how much you might be spending annually for your modeling career.
Being a plus size model is definitely a career where you have to pay to play! Meaning, you have to spend money to make money. Investing in yourself is CRUCIAL in modeling.
As a plus size model, your expenses will range from beauty, gas, travel, photoshoots, and MORE! Below we’ll be talking all about what these expenses are, how much they cost, and what this means for you financially.
If you’re serious about modeling aka you’re not just doing a photoshoot for fun or an audition twice a year. You’re actually trying to have a career, find business and/or agencies, grow etc.; then every year, it’s up to YOU to keep track of all these expenses.
At the end of the year, depending what state you live in, a majority of the expenses listed below will be considered tax deductions.
There’s probably expenses that you didn’t even think about!
I’d like to note – I would deem my costs as lower because I’m a content creator. Meaning I get a lot of make up, hair, skincare, and other products for free. If I wasn’t a content creator, I would be adding more of these expenses and my expenses would probably be higher.
PLEASE NOTE: This is what I’ve personally done in the past, but I’m not a CPA. Always consult with a certified accountant or CPA when planning tax write offs.
With that said, I personally highly recommend getting an accountant and not trying to do these taxes by yourself online. I pay $300 – $350 for my accountant once a year and it saves me thousands I probably wouldn’t of been able to do by myself.
Below are all of my REAL life expenses for plus size modeling in 2022.

Other Annual Costs for Plus Size Models
Other annual costs for plus size models may include, but not limited too…
- Waxing/Sugaring
- Classes/Courses such as my ‘How To Become A Plus Size Model‘ masterclass
- Phonebill
- Make Up
- Skincare
- Web fee from modeling agencies (learn more about web-fees from modeling agencies here HERE)
- Car Miles OR Repairs*** (in most states you can only do one or the other, I pick miles because you usually spend a lot more in milage than repairs annually)
- Comp Cards
- Coaching/Consultations such as my one on one private coaching you can find HERE
- Website Costs
- Rent*** (this would only include the square footage of your at home office, you would divide the quart footage by your rent then measure your office space and calculate accordingly)
- Apps used for Castings/Editing such as Casting Networks or Splice
- Logo/Branding
How Should You Keep Track of All Your Expenses
Okay so personally, I keep track of all my expenses in a google doc for each year and I break it down into four categories.
- ‘Made’ section: show how much I made, where/what I made it from, what date I received it and how I received it Example $2,000 – Target Modeling Job May 24th via bank transfer
- ‘Charity’ section: any receipts I may have gotten for things I gave to charity
- ‘Write Off’s’ section: all the expenses we talked above that help maintain my modeling career
- ‘Miles’ section: all the miles I drove and what day I drove them Example 44 miles – Photoshoot May 24th
HOWEVER, I am about to switch over everything into a business account so eventually everything will be handled with an accountant / via quickbooks.
Intuit Quickbooks is an easy way to keep track of all your expenses. I’ve never personally used it, but I have a couple friends who do!
ONCE AGAIN PLEASE NOTE: This is what I’ve personally done in the past, but I’m not a CPA. Always consult with a certified accountant or CPA when planning tax write offs.
